The CMbE Charity Committee – Creating a brighter tomorrow

The CarnaudMetalbox Engineering Charity Fund has been helping employees and donating to local charities for the last 30 years.

The money in this fund is donated entirely by employees of the company and is held in a separate account to any CMbE monies. The fund also supports company competitions to help boost morale.

Donations to various local charities are made on an annual basis. Here are a few ways the charity fund has helped over the festive season:

Employee-support Supporting staff members in their time of need:

Contributions from this fund are primarily there to help our own work force who may find themselves in difficult situations, for example bereavement or ill health etc.

Every year CMbE help The Rotary Club of Shipley in their annual Toy Collection for local children at Christmas.  In 2019 Nearly 300 children were given toys for Christmas, including some at Special School, 20 families received gift vouchers, they provided presents for the local Foodbank, a Women’s Refuge and other organisations, 50 children were also taken to see the Pantomime.

CMbE staff and the Charity Fund normally donate toys to this appeal but due to the 2020 pandemic and the potential health hazard to volunteers handling goods we were all asked to send gift vouchers instead or donate to the charity so they could buy the vouchers themselves. CMbE staff got on board sending donations and The Charity Fund donated £1000.

See below a message from the Rotary Club:

The public, CarnaudMetalbox Engineering, Butterfield Trust, Switch2, Farfield Nursery, Baildon and Shipley councils and ASDA responded magnificently and a total of just over £4000 was raised in three weeks and has, or will be, distributed via Shipley Rotary Club to make Christmas a little more memorable for many people.

On behalf of those involved may we say a massive thank you to all who supported our venture, and we wish you a happy, safe Christmas and great hopes for the New Year.

Food donations are made to the local food bank by members of staff all year round but this Christmas we knew things would be extra tough, The Charity Fund therefore donated an extra £1000, see below a message from the food bank:

Happy New Year and thank you so much for all of your support over 2020! Even though no one was expecting it and it has been such a difficult year, the compassion and generosity that you and Bradford’s community has shown has been a shining light in the darkness.

Over 2020 together we fed 14,205 people (5666 last year), people who would have gone hungry without your support. On average, we fed 263 people and gave 4 Tonnes of food away every week. We’ve had an army of 60 regular volunteers with another 130 people volunteering at some point during the year.

This is an incredible achievement to meet this huge rise in the need for emergency food parcels. Over December we also gave out over 500 Christmas hampers and presents throughout December which was a joy to be able to spread a little bit of Christmas joy.

Christmas 2020 was going to be very different, to bring some much needed Christmas cheer The Charity Committee invited all CMbE families to send in their Children’s Christmassy Creations. Each child that sent in a picture of their creation received a chocolate treat in the post.
